Fall Prevention – Working in Restraint

When it comes to working at heights, fall prevention is a critical consideration. One of the most effective approaches to prevent falls is the principle of working in restraint. In this blog, we’ll explore what it means, the systems involved, and other methods to ensure worker safety.

What Is Working in Restraint?

Working in restraint prevents a person from reaching areas where a fall could occur. The system physically "restrains" a worker by attaching them to an anchor point or static line using a harness and lanyard. To reduce the impact of an unplanned fall, an energy absorber must always be included in the system.

However, a restraint system is only effective if the worker maintains secure footing. It is unsuitable for slopes exceeding 15 degrees, where alternative safety measures are necessary.

Key Guidelines:

  • Restraint systems must be installed by competent individuals.

  • Compliance with AS/NZS 1891.4: Industrial Fall-Arrest Systems and Devices is mandatory.

Whenever safety harnesses are required, working in restraint should be prioritized to minimize injury risks.
